Schematics Interpretation and Subsea BOP Controls Fundamentals
Course Description
This five-day course focuses on subsea BOP control system operating philosophy, schematics, troubleshooting and reporting. With the knowledge presented in this course, you will learn to read schematics and use them to help identify problems in hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical control systems, including MUX systems.
This course presents much of the same material as WEST’s Subsea BOP Controls course and the Symbols, Schematics & Troubleshooting course, but with less hands-on focus. It is especially appropriate for persons requiring an understanding of the equipment without a need for in-depth shop training.
As you probably know, a large part of the downtime experienced in drilling is associated with controls. In fact, in a recent study managed by WEST, it was found that controls were responsible for almost 65% of the reported failures for subsea BOP systems.
Course Objectives
Learn or refresh your ability to read and understand electrical and hydraulic drawings, schematics and symbols, together with component-level operation and maintenance of major system components such as regulators, pumps, control valves and pods. The industry-standard ANSI symbols taught here are also applicable to many other rig systems, such as the top drive, pipe racking system, fuel and ballast systems. You will learn to use drawings and schematics to diagnose and rectify equipment faults. You will create a simple system schematic of your own using a computer-aided drawing (CAD) system and use it to trace the system on actual hardware.
Who Should Attend
Rig supervisors, young engineers, company men and others working in the drilling industry who would benefit from a refresher course in drawings, schematics and/or control systems. This course will help you understand and validate reports and drilling equipment issues from the rig staff.
Provider/Delivery Method
Engineer-led classroom with PowerPoint presentations and in-class lab exercises using CAD.
Prerequisites
Field and /or equipment experience would be very helpful.

WEST pioneered the business of 3rd-party assessments of well control equipment and is still the preeminent leader in this field, with thousands of BOP/well control surveys. WEST is also an industry leader in survey assessments of drilling systems on rigs of all kinds, from ultra-deepwater to land rigs. These assessments cover a wide range of equipment and activities, such as:
Nothing is more frustrating than having new equipment and then finding that it does not work as you envisioned. Highly experienced WEST personnel will oversee, commission and accept new construction. When needed, WEST's engineering expertise may be called upon. Project management services are also available. Working with manufacturers, integrators and shipyards, these WEST personnel ensure that the equipment is fit for your purpose.
