Downtime Narrowly Averted with Faulty SCR Drilling DC Drive

In December 2002, on a rig in the GOM, an unusual SCR drilling drive issue occurred. A small amount of AC ripple on a weak power supply caused rapid and uneven wear in the DC motor brushes. Fortunately, the situation did not result in downtime but could have quickly progressed to damage a mud pump DC motor sufficiently to require its replacement.
